    Complex

It is currently up to the employer whether they choose to require employees to wear a mask. They may simply recommend that they do, in which the same health and safety standards and risk assessments that would otherwise have to be carried out by the employer if they were to require mask wearing would not be necessary, thus creating a loophole for the employer. It is possible that new legislation in the future could prevent this however, and that mask wearing will be made compulsory.

The guidance around face masks has been unclear for some time and even differs between the UK Government and the Scottish Government. But the safe answer right now is definitely to wear masks.
